Novo Blinds · Manufacturer’s Guide
Local factory. Big-box shelf. Reseller showroom.
Three ways blinds reach an Edmonton window. Here is where each one actually wins, from the people who run the cutting tables.
Every set of blinds in Edmonton arrives through one of three supply chains: a big-box shelf, a reseller’s showroom, or a local factory. On day one the product on the window can look nearly identical. What differs is everything around it: how long you waited, what sizes were possible, what happens when a part fails in year four, and who answers the phone when something goes wrong.
We manufacture blinds in Edmonton, so we have an obvious interest in this comparison. We also think it holds up without any salesmanship, including the places where the big-box store is simply the better buy. That part is in here too.
The short answer: for stock sizes on standard windows at the lowest upfront price, big-box wins. For custom sizes, shorter custom lead times, parts that stay available, and one accountable company from measure to install, a local manufacturer wins. Resellers offer genuine local service, layered onto someone else’s product and someone else’s schedule.
Three ways blinds reach your window
Big-box retail. Stock blinds on the shelf, usually cut-down kits in fixed size increments, plus special-order programs that ship from overseas or US warehouses. You install them yourself or arrange an installer separately. Nobody in the building made the product, and nobody will make its parts next year.
Resellers and franchises. A real local team measures and installs, which has real value. The product itself is manufactured elsewhere and imported, so lead times follow the importer’s calendar, and the price carries both the factory’s margin and the showroom’s. When something fails, the fix depends on a supply chain the local team doesn’t control.
A local manufacturer. The company that quotes your windows also cuts, assembles, installs, and warranties the product. In our case that means a measure at your home, fabrication in our 15,000 sq ft Edmonton facility (we’ve been making blinds here since 2011, at 200+ blinds a day), and installation by the same team. One name on the whole job.
The comparison, at a glance
| Big-box | Reseller / franchise | Local factory (Novo) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical custom lead time | 6–8+ weeks special order | 6–12 weeks, importer’s schedule | 3–5 weeks, consult to install |
| Stock & standard sizes | Same-day off the shelf | Rarely offered | Factory pickup from around $75 per blind on smaller standard windows |
| Made-to-measure | Cut-down kits, limited | Within the importer’s size chart | Cut to the millimetre; zebra spans to 120″ on one blind |
| Repairs & parts later | Store return window, then done | Depends on the importer | We stock the components we build with |
| Warranty | Product overseas, install on you | Often split product vs install | One company answers for both, 5-year warranty |
| Price structure | Lowest sticker on stock sizes | Retail margin plus service margin | Factory-direct; strongest on custom and multi-window |
| Best for | Rentals, quick fixes, standard windows | Brand preference with local service | Custom fits, whole-home orders, motorized, longevity |
Lead times: the actual numbers
A custom order through an import chain typically runs 6 to 8 weeks, and 8 to 12 is not rare once ocean freight and the importer’s queue are involved. Our typical Edmonton order runs 3 to 5 weeks from consultation to installed, because the cutting table is in the same city as your windows. Manufacturing itself: roller shades in 7 to 10 business days, honeycomb in 10 to 14, motorized builds in 12 to 18. The full breakdown of why Western-made blinds ship faster is its own article.
For possession dates, showhome deadlines, and renovations on a schedule, that gap usually decides the purchase before price ever comes up.
Sizing: the shelf has limits
Stock blinds come in fixed increments, and a cut-down kit can only get narrower, never wider or taller. If your window lands between sizes, you live with light gaps. Made-to-measure through a reseller works within whatever chart the importer publishes. A factory cuts to the millimetre for the window in front of it: wide living-room spans (zebra blinds to 120 inches on a single blind), patio walls, and the odd-sized basement windows Edmonton builders love.
Parts and repairs: year four is the real test
Blinds fail in small ways. A chain wears, a bracket cracks, a motor ages, a bottom rail gets bent in a move. We stock the components we build with every day, so a repair is usually a part swap or a fabric re-cut, not a replacement purchase. Big-box SKUs rotate; once the line changes, matching parts and fabrics are gone. To be fair, any competent local shop can fix generic hardware. The difference shows in fabric matches, cassette-specific parts, and whether anyone is obligated to help.
Accountability: one name on the job
When a big-box special order arrives wrong, the store didn’t make it and the manufacturer didn’t measure it. When a reseller’s product fails, the product warranty and the installation warranty can point at each other. When one company measures, builds, and installs, there is nobody else to point at. If a measurement is off, remaking the blind is our cost, not yours.
Pricing structure, honestly
On day-one price for standard windows, the big-box shelf beats everyone, including us. Stock manufactured at overseas volume is cheap, and if that solves your window, it is a rational buy. Custom flips the math: there is no importer’s margin or showroom layer in a factory quote. Our entry pricing starts around $75 per blind at factory pickup on smaller standard windows, and installed multi-window orders, itemized per window, are where factory-direct pulls clearly ahead of showroom quotes. Full numbers live in our Edmonton cost guide and our Surrey & Vancouver cost guide.
Where big-box is the right call
Rental units with tenant turnover. A window that needs covering today. Standard sizes with a comfortable DIYer on the ladder. A tight budget covering one or two ordinary windows. None of that needs a factory, and pretending otherwise would be salesmanship.
Where a local manufacturer earns it
Custom sizes and whole-home orders, where per-window installed pricing and a single visit matter. Motorization, where the drive, the app setup, and the service should come from one place. Commercial and Division 12 work, where spec support and volume matter. New builds on possession schedules. And any window you plan to still own in ten years: honeycombs for Edmonton winters, solar rollers for south glare, and parts that exist because the factory that made the blind still exists, a few kilometres away.

Frequently asked questions
Are big-box blinds cheaper than locally made blinds?
On stock sizes, yes, and the gap is real. On custom sizes the gap closes or reverses: a factory quote has no import or showroom margin, and installed multi-window orders are itemized per window. Longevity widens the difference, since repairable blinds don’t get rebought.
Who actually makes Novo blinds?
We do. Every blind is cut, assembled, and finished in our 15,000 sq ft Edmonton facility, roughly 200 blinds a day, and we’ve built here since 2011. Nothing is a rebranded import.
How much faster is a local manufacturer?
A typical custom order with us runs 3 to 5 weeks from consultation to installed. Import-chain custom orders typically run 6 to 8 weeks, and 8 to 12 happens.
What happens if a blind breaks after a few years?
We stock the chains, tension devices, brackets, cassettes, and motors we build with, and we can re-cut fabric for damaged panels. Most fixes are a part, not a replacement blind.
Do you sell blinds without installation?
Yes. Factory pickup starts around $75 per blind on smaller standard windows, and we supply trades and retailers through our components and dealer programs.
Is a reseller a bad way to buy blinds?
No. A good reseller measures and installs properly, which matters. You pay a second margin for the same imported product and wait on the importer’s schedule; whether that trade is worth it depends on the brand you’re after.
