Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between roller blinds and roller shades?
The two terms are used interchangeably — both describe a single fabric panel that rolls onto a tube at the top of the window. 'Roller shades' is more common in North America; 'roller blinds' is the global term. At Novo we use them to mean the same product.
What fabric should I choose for a bedroom roller blind?
Choose blackout fabric when reducing light is the priority. It blocks light through the fabric, but light can still enter around the edges. Mounting and optional side channels affect the result. For a softer morning glow, compare light-filtering samples during your free in-home consultation.
How much do custom roller blinds cost in Edmonton?
Your quote depends on window size, fabric, control choice and installation scope. Novo offers a free initial in-home consultation and measure in Edmonton, followed by a written quote. Ask for cordless or motorized options to be listed separately so you can compare the same configuration. Compare our full range of custom blinds in Edmonton.
What's the difference between blackout, light-filtering, and sunscreen fabrics?
Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric; gaps around the blind can still let light in. Light-filtering fabric softens daylight, with privacy depending on the fabric and lighting. Sunscreen (solar) fabric reduces glare while preserving more of the view. Compare samples for both daytime and evening privacy before choosing.
Do Novo roller blinds come with cordless operation?
Ask for a cordless lift option in your quote. Cordless operation is not included with every roller blind, and available controls depend on the window and configuration. We confirm the selected control and what is included before you order.
Can roller blinds be motorized and connected to smart home systems?
Motorization depends on the opening and selected roller-blind configuration. We confirm suitability before you order, including for high or hard-to-reach windows. Basic remote control does not need Wi-Fi. For Wi-Fi or smart-home control, you need a compatible hub; we confirm support for Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Siri through Apple HomeKit with your selected motor and hub.
How long does it take to get custom roller blinds in Edmonton?
Made in about 1 week. Installed within 2–3 weeks of approval. Other Western Canadian cities, including roller shades in Surrey and roller shades in Vancouver, include shipping time and local installer scheduling.
Inside-mount or outside-mount: which is better for roller blinds?
Inside mount gives a recessed look within the window frame; it needs enough clear depth for the selected brackets, cassette and controls. Outside mount overlaps the opening and can help reduce edge light. At your free in-home measure, we check the frame, handles and available space, then recommend the mounting position and overlap.
How wide can a single roller blind be made?
Maximum widths depend on the fabric and opacity. For very wide windows like patio doors or great rooms, we typically split the opening into two or three roller blinds on a shared headrail to keep the fabric flat and the lift mechanism reliable. Our team confirms the exact maximum during your in-home measure.
How do I clean roller blinds?
For routine dust, use a soft vacuum brush attachment or microfiber cloth on the lowered blind. For spots and stains, dab gently with mild soap and a damp cloth — don't soak the fabric, especially blackout linings. Solar and sunscreen fabrics rinse clean with a damp cloth on both sides.
